Shah Jahan marries Nur Jahan's niece, Arjumand Banu Begam, who becomes known as Mumtaz Mahal. The same year, the British set up a trading post at Surat in Gujarat, establishing a permanent presence in India for the first time. Other Europeans operating in India at the same time are the Portuguese, the Dutch and, in 1672, the French.
